Colour Contacts

A multi-media dance performance commissioned by the Museum of London for the London voices exhibition, 2004. Colour Contacts imagines the city of London through the eyes of its inhabitants, exploring the memories, voices impression of all those who live work and visit here. These voices were drawn from the oral history collection of the museum of London. It was performed at the Museum of London, Brent Brent Cross shopping centre, Southwark Tube Station and the Ealing Mela.Colour contacts was supported bythe Heritage Lottery Fund.

Priyam

A Bharatanatyam performance about the shades of love. Priyam illustrates the longing of a devotee for god as an erotic expression between lovers.

Shankara

A performance of classical Bharatanatyam repertoire in praise of Lord Shiva, the creator of truth and destroyer of ignorance. Performed at the October Gallery as part of the exhibition ‘Serendipity – New Art for Sri Lanka”, April 2003 accompanied by live music and narration.

The Milk White Ocean

Beeja collaborated with the Wonderful Beast Theatre Company to tell the Indian creation myth of the churning of the ocean. This storytelling dance performance was presented in the Nehru Gallery at the V&A, the main hall in the Nartural History Museum and and toured in North London.

The Draught of Fishes and other stories

This site specific performance was an encounter between Indian classical dance and the most celebrated surviving artworks of the Italian High Renaissance. Anusha performed in front of two of Raphael’s monumental cartoons depicting biblical scenes. The performance, in collaboration with Wonderful Beast Theatre Company, interpreted and drawing out the stories and characters and enabling the audience to find new life in the painting. Performed in the Raphael Cartoon Gallery at the V&A during the ‘Encounters’ Exhibition, 2004

Projects

Wonders in numbers

An interactive performance piece exploring how numbers build and divide to create the dynamic rthyms that drive Bharatanatyam dance. It was toured in Harringay primary schools in 2005 giving children an exciting physical way to connect with numbers and boost their skills in numeracy, It was supported by the Scarman trust and the west green Community Chest.

Panchatantra and other animal stories

Beeja worked alongside the ethnic minorities coordinator and year two class teachers at South Harringay Primary School to create this dance theatre production. The students created the narrative script during class and a selection of their creative writing was composed into songs to accompany the dance. Each child had an important role to play in providing material and performing in the final production. They were writers, narrators, dancers and musicians.

Hum (Us)

A dance theatre performance addressing non violence and anti-bullying created by Beeja in South Harringay Junior School  and Tiverton Primary School. Beeja engaged in inset training with teachers to ensure that the project was fully integrated with class room studies while parents and family groups were involved in discussions and producing costumes.
